Case study
Western Springs College
Western Springs College in Auckland was rebuilt as New Zealand’s largest public school project, a shift from scattered single-storey classrooms to one vertical campus built around a full-height atrium. I was engaged as AV consultant and designer across the rebuild, working through everything from early-stage briefing to final commissioning.
The result puts most of the school’s teaching and learning under one roof, with specialist science, art and technology spaces, a gymnasium, a performance venue in the Whare Tapere, and a dedicated wharenui for the school’s te reo Māori immersion unit. AV had to work quietly across all of it: legible speech in flexible, open-plan learning hubs, reliable reinforcement in the performance space, and systems straightforward enough for teaching staff to run day to day.

Specialties
Two building types, one set of problems worth solving properly.
Schools
Classrooms, learning hubs, multi-purpose halls and performance spaces all ask different things of an AV system. I design for intelligibility first, so a teacher can be heard at the back without fighting the room. Then I build in the flexibility schools need as spaces are used by multiple staff and students. Systems are specified to survive daily use, not just a handover demo.
Churches
Church systems need to carry the spoken word clearly and the music emotionally, in the same service. Whether you require discreet technology for a traditional church or full sound reinforcement in an auditorium for a contemporary house of worship. I design quality audio and vision systems built so the technology supports the service instead of drawing attention to itself.
About
Jamie Cashmore
I’ve had a keen interest in audio from a young age, learning the saxophone and singing in the school choir in primary school, then picking up a guitar in my early teens. Playing in bands expanded my knowledge of installed audio, frequenting venues around New Zealand. This is when I discovered that not all audio systems are created equal.
After completing a Diploma of Audio Engineering in 2012, I spent time in well-known Auckland recording studios before designing and building my own studio inside a historic house in Akaroa, Canterbury.
I then spent six years at Auckland-based Edwards Sound in several roles, working on successful projects in schools, churches, hospitality and commercial buildings around New Zealand and Australia. It was at Edwards that I developed a technical interest in commercial audio visual systems, and was fortunate to work directly with several international manufacturers.
I was fortunate enough to consult and design the AV systems for Western Springs College in Auckland, New Zealand’s largest public school rebuild to date.
Based on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, I provide independent audiovisual consulting, AV system design and technical specification for schools, churches, performance spaces and commercial projects across Queensland and Australia.
